Taiji, Japan: Wish I could be there
… so I can help the Cove Guardians.
I have seen The Cove three times to date. I got it back in February as a late Christmas present from my sister. Another DVD to add to my collection of things that mean a lot to mean, including Free Willy. I have been keeping a close eye on the Cove (considering where I am, on the other side of the world), hoping and hoping that Nature will remain on our side as it has for the past few days, for in the past four days a combination of weather and losing track of the dolphins has been against the “fishermen”—the dolphins will be safe for another day.
I read on a couple of Cove Guardian blogs that some of them visited the Taiji Whaling Museum. The fate of nine dolphin calves captured for captivity—according to the “trainers”—is unknown. They claim to have no knowledge of the calves. For those who do not know, the Taiji Whaling Museum is a sort of broker when it comes to the dolphins sent to captivity who are captured from the Cove. They also serve whale and dolphin meat. And, at one point in time, they held a lone orca named Ku. She was moved to the Port of Nagoya aquarium, but died in 2008. She was the last survivor of the infamous Taiji Five.
These “fishermen” are on my list of most hated in existence.
